Meteor showers for the rest of 2012!

Post  Alec Parker on Thu Aug 16, 2012 9:45 pm

Well, I missed out on the Perseid Meteor Shower during August. Bad skies or no shows. However, all is not lost as we have further meteor showers coming up.

Orionid Meteor Shower - 20/21 October - planet earth ploughs in to the debris left over from Halley's Comet.
Leonid Meteor Shower - 16/17 November - planet earth collides with debris from the comet Tempel-Tuttle.
Geminid Meteor Shower - 13/14 December - interestingly this debris is from an asteroid called Phaethon, not a comet.

So here's hoping. I'd like to see at least one meteor before the end of the year! All the best!

Well despite the promising prospects for this years Perseids, like so much over the summer, clouds seem to have kept most of the display well and truly obscured from view, at least from our patch.

I manage to catch only two semi-decent Perseids through almost three hours of watching on a couple of nights. Did manage to spot quite a number of satellites during the time though - more passes of the ISS than meteors!!
